5 Budget Friendly Ideas to Update your Home for the Holidays
by Sharon Hankins

They say a change is as good as a holiday, so when it comes to making small physical changes within our home, sometimes that is all it takes for us to feel more relaxed, less overwhelmed and ready to take on another day, month or even the year ahead.

Here are a few suggestions that won’t break the bank.

  1. Declutter a space – getting rid of accumulated toys, books, kitchenware is a great place to start. One area at a time.
  2. Do a “room reset” – simply moving and rearranging furniture in a living room or a bedroom, can make it feel like you’ve created a whole new space. And this idea doesn’t cost a cent!
  3. Paint a piece of furniture – whether it’s the ‘80s orangey pine bookshelf in your living room, or Grandma’s out-of-date dresser that you’ve inherited, you’ll be surprised what a fresh coat of paint can do to brighten up an entire room for a fresh new look.
  4. Treasure Hunt your house – have a think about what items might have been pushed to the back of the closet, or your garage or garden shed, that with a little clean up, would make an interesting conversation piece and décor item in another area of the house. Maybe you have a piece of family history hiding an old box somewhere. With Farmhouse style still on trend, there’s loads of possibilities. Eg. An old metal bucket repurposed to hold magazines; a wooden crate turned on its side makes a great shelf on the wall; a stack of antique books tied with string, placed on a coffee table.
  5. Change your wall art – update your family photos and create a gallery wall using frames of different sizes, painted the same colour. Shop local op-shops for frames or canvases that can be re-purposed. Turn woven cane baskets, hats or bowls on their sides to hang as decorative art.
