Virtual Fence Improves Road Safety & Protects Wildlife in Park Ridge

A series of green posts along Park Ridge Road at Park Ridge are a ‘virtual fence’ which aims to prevent wildlife crossing the road at night when vehicles are approaching.

The fence posts have electronic devices attached that emit low-level non-evasive sound and light to alert, repel and deter animals from crossing the road.

The devices are activated for short periods by the headlights of approaching vehicles.

Division 8 Councillor Cherie Dalley said Logan City Council had decided to trial this innovative technology along Park Ridge Road between Jedfire Park and Clarke Road, Park Ridge.

“Sadly, this section of Park Ridge Road has been identified as a wildlife collision hot spot,” Cr Dalley said.

“However, after the installation of the fence last year, we have seen almost a 70 per cent reduction in the number of wallaby deaths on this road.

“This is a great outcome for our environment and our community.”

Cr Dalley said Council would monitor the fence to ensure it continues to enhance traffic safety and help protect our native wildlife.

There are over a dozen virtual fence installations across Australia and other locations in Logan could be considered if the Park Ridge trial continues to prove successful.
