Greenbank parkrun

Did the summer heat steal your motivation for that fitness resolution this year?

Over the past eighteen months, Spring Mountain Reserve (Tully Connection Rd, Greenbank) has undergone a major transformation with the addition of a playground, 2.5km concrete path and ninja warrior course. Greenbank parkrun provides community members with a free, weekly, timed 5km event that welcomes walkers and runners to participate in each Saturday morning at 7am.

With the aim of building a community event, Stuart Steele and Chrissy Cox first launched Greenbank parkrun in August 2017. An average of 20 community members would meet each Saturday morning and complete the 5km grass course. In December 2018, Cr Laurie Smith and Logan City Council completed an upgrade to the course which installed a concrete path that now sees an average of 100 community members come together and start their weekend off with a 5km walk/run. This is a family event that welcomes prams and dogs (one only per person). The rules are one dog per person on a controlled lead, and children under the age of 11 must be within arm’s reach of a parent or designated adult for the duration of the event. It is a great way to meet people in the community and being solely reliant on volunteers, it’s a fantastic way to give back to the community.

The park upgrades, especially the path, have seen an increase in activity with families and individuals utilising the facilities to ride bicycles and run/walk together both mornings and evenings. Community members engage in a circuit of the ninja warrior course and afternoons of the BBQ with friends and family are a norm, especially during the holidays and weekends. Further exercise equipment will be installed towards the end of this year offering greater opportunities to improve one’s health and wellbeing.
