Blue Light Disco by Kathleen deLeon
The Browns Plains Police Station Blue Light Disco (BLD) is run by Police and civilian volunteers to encourage better relations between the police, young people, their parents and the community.
The BLD is held on the first Friday of every month at the Logan West Community Centre. Kids pay $5.00 and get a ticket for the lucky door prizes.
Volunteers include new recruit Police Officers, Police Officers and civilians. Volunteers must have a Blue Card and undergo an application process with the Queensland State Blue Light Association.
Vyv Dance OAM invited me to visit the July BLD. I was welcomed by the wonderful volunteers. Bryan and Danielle White are long-time volunteers. Danielle attended the disco as a young girl and Bryan and Danielle now take their daughters. Danielle is clearly passionate about the BLD and believes in the community connections the BLD promotes.
The music is loud, the lasers are bright, and the disco balls disperse colour around the room. The atmosphere is electric and the kids full of excitement. The disco runs from 6.30 – 8.30pm. Most have a theme which the kids can dress-up for and have photos taken at the photo wall.
There are 30-40 volunteers and many have been volunteering for over 20 years. The BLD is in its 30th year of operation and is the biggest and most successful BLD with 350 and 450 attendees.
Some of the funds raised from the BLD, go towards a camp and other community needs.
The camp is an annual event for 36 kids at, Bornhoffen. The camp is to build life skills for the kids and to develop positive self-esteem and leadership skills.
Other community beneficiaries include:
- 40 Christmas Hampers (Donated by Coles)
- 60 Christmas Hams
- Bathroom Renovations and air conditioning for a young girl with vision and speech impairment.
- A Sensory Pod for a young boy
- Sponsoring World Champions like Logan’s Molly McGill and sports clubs
- Donating towards a Motorised wheelchair for a local resident
It is no wonder that this group of amazing volunteers recently won the City of Logan 2019 Volunteers Awards for the most outstanding community organisation.
